Israel-Gaza War : The Israeli army says 24 of its soldiers were killed in Gaza on Monday
On Monday, the Israeli army faced its deadliest day since the initiation of their ground operation in Gaza, with 24 soldiers losing their lives. Among them were 21 reservists who perished in an explosion, likely triggered by mines strategically placed by Israeli forces in two buildings slated for demolition, as reported by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). A missile fired by Palestinian armed fighters is believed to have struck a tank guarding the troops just moments before the explosion.
The IDF is currently conducting an investigation into the incident. The tragic event occurred in central Gaza near the kibbutz of Kissufim on the Israeli side of the border at approximately 16:00 (14:00 GMT) on Monday. The reservists were engaged in an operation aimed at facilitating the safe return of southern Israel residents to their homes, following the evacuation of tens of thousands prompted by the Hamas attack on October 7.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, under the control of Hamas, 195 Palestinians lost their lives in the past day. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, the IDF's chief spokesman, provided details on the location and circumstances of the reservists' demise during a press briefing.
The first funerals for those killed in the explosion were solemnly held at Mount Herzl in a rainy Jerusalem. Mourners, many dressed in military uniforms, gathered amidst a sea of blue and white Israeli flags.
Prior to this incident, Israel's military had confirmed the death of three officers in a separate attack in southern Gaza on the same day. Despite the hardships faced, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that Israel would persist with its offensive until achieving "absolute victory."
